Futsal is enjoying a surge in popularity at the 14th annual Anchor AIMS Games.

The Games’ futsal co-ordinator Kevin Forde said that there were 39 indoor football teams registered this year – double the 2016 turnout.

Somerville Intermediate’s girls team was in high spirits after winning its first game, 7-3, against Pongakawa School.

Somerville team captain Bianca Day, 12, scored five goals in the winning game. Bianca had played football for six years before deciding to play futsal.

“I wanted to try something new,” Bianca says.

Aditi Thota, 12, is Somerville’s self-proclaimed ‘pep talk master’. This is her first AIMS Games tournament.

“I like futsal because it is faster,” Aditi says.

The team had to fundraise $6,000 to make the journey from Auckland.

“We are really excited to be here,” Bianca said.
