Whakatane Intermediate reigned supreme in the NZCT AIMS Games golf teams’ competition after the last stroke of the tournament was played in wet conditions at the Mount Maunganui course today.
The team of Year 7 Carson Van Asselt and Year 8 golfers Tyler Van Asselt and Corbin Aldridge took the trophy by 32 points, ahead of Tauranga Intermediate School A and Taupo Intermediate.
Tyler Van Asselt said the team had planned to make a run for the title from the first day.
“Once I had my first round I thought we had a chance,” he said. “It was pretty good.”
The Whakatane squad held an 18 point lead heading into the final day’s play and were quietly confident about taking the gold.
After playing 72 holes over four different courses, Tyler’s younger brother Carson said it was nice to get a result out of the week, and the best part was getting to play in all sorts of conditions, as well as getting the week off school.
Tyler also took home the gold medal for the boys’ individual stableford, with a score of 174 for the week.
The girls’ individual stableford was taken out by Michelle Huang of Chilton St James School, whose score of 148 got her over the line ahead of Sara Harlock from Diocesan School Auckland by one point.
The girls’ individual gross title was taken home in spectacular fashion by defending champion Rose Zheng from Bucklands Beach Intermediate. Her score of 293 (six-over-par for the tournament) saw her win the gold medal by 28 shots.
